Faithfulness is a quiet virtue. It does not draw crowds or win applause, but it holds everything together, a marriage, a friendship, a congregation, a walk with God. To be faithful is to be reliable, true to your word and true to your Lord, the same today as yesterday. The Bible prizes faithfulness because God Himself is faithful, and He looks for the same in His people. Let us see what it says.
God Is Faithful
Our faithfulness, where we have any, is only a reflection of His. In the middle of Jeremiah's grief he could still say, "It is of the LORD's mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness" (Lamentations 3:22-23). Moses called Him "the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy" (Deuteronomy 7:9). Whatever God has promised, He will do, for "he is faithful that promised" (Hebrews 10:23). He has never once broken His word, and He never will.
He Is Faithful in Our Trials
God's faithfulness is not a distant fact. It is our security in the hardest moments. "God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it" (1 Corinthians 10:13). No temptation will ever come at us that God has not measured, and with it He always provides a way out. When we are tempted past what we think we can stand, His faithfulness, not our strength, is what we lean on.
Faithfulness Is Required of Us
Because God is faithful, He looks for faithfulness in those who serve Him. Faithfulness stands in the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22). And of those entrusted with anything from God, Paul wrote, "it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful" (1 Corinthians 4:2). God is not first looking for the gifted, the impressive, or the successful. He is looking for the faithful, the ones who can be counted on to do what they were given to do.
Faithful in the Little Things
Faithfulness is proven not in the grand moments but in the small, daily, unseen ones. Jesus said, "He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much: and he that is unjust in the least is unjust also in much" (Luke 16:10). The commendation He looks forward to giving is, "Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things" (Matthew 25:21). The one who is faithful in little things, when no one is watching and nothing seems to hang on it, is the one God can trust with more.
Faithful to Our Word
Part of being faithful is keeping our word, even when it costs us. The man God welcomes is described as one who "sweareth to his own hurt, and changeth not" (Psalm 15:4). Jesus said, "let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay" (Matthew 5:37), meaning a Christian's plain word should be as good as any oath. Solomon observed how rare this is, asking, "a faithful man who can find?" (Proverbs 20:6). In a world of broken promises, the person who simply keeps his word stands out, and honors God by it.
Faithful Unto Death
Above all, God calls us to be faithful to the end. To a church facing persecution the Lord said, "be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life" (Revelation 2:10). The prize is not for those who start well but for those who finish, for "he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved" (Matthew 24:13). So be faithful as your God is faithful. Be faithful in the small things, faithful to your word, and faithful to your Lord all the way to the end, and a crown of life awaits you.
